Young researchers with an excellent Masters degree in economics are encouraged to apply for admission to the DIW Graduate Center and/or the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) to undertake doctoral studies and research in the fields of development economics and the economics of

conflict and insecurity under the supervision of Professor Tilman Brück. His work mostly focuses on the micro-level analysis of behaviour and welfare in

transition and developing countries, especially under conditions of high risk, insecurity, conflict and reconstruction. Previous work using indivudal and household-level survey data has included studies in Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Mozambique, Angola and Colombia, though other case studies are possible, too. 

Both programs offer scholarships for coursework and research in a variety of fields in the social sciences. Application deadlines are April 1 for the Graduate Center and February 15 for the BGSS, respectively.
